A Love Story

Our Story

Every love story is beautiful, but ours is our favourite. Here is how it all began…

How We Met

Like many questionable decisions made during lockdown, their love story began on Tinder. Scott had just returned from Australia, riding out Covid at his parents' house in Stafford. Charlotte, meanwhile, was in Bristol having loudly declared she was done with men after a spectacular run of bad dates. Naturally, she ignored her own advice and messaged him anyway. What followed was a lockdown romance built on late-night texts, endless laughter, and more than one occasion of accidentally falling asleep on FaceTime. As it turned out, all it took to find the love of their lives was a global pandemic, questionable Wi-Fi, and one swipe right. The rest, as they say, is history.

Our First Date

After a couple of unofficial first dates over video call, the real thing finally arrived, a walk in the Cotswolds, halfway between Bristol and Stafford on a cold November Sunday. Charlotte arrived only slightly late, and was forced to exit via the passenger side, with all the grace of someone who had absolutely not planned for this. Scott, having arrived first and parked further up the road, watched the entire performance unfold, quietly reconsidering his life choices. One spilled latte and an awkward greeting later, they set off with location sharing firmly switched on, because one can never be too careful with internet strangers. The concern lasted approximately ten minutes. The conversation flowed immediately, easy and warm, as though they were old friends. They stopped for lunch in a field, a detail that would become important later, where it was mutually agreed that neither of them was a murderer, and that there was very definitely chemistry. In keeping with lockdown rules, the entire date was entirely, absolutely, completely socially distanced. There was no kissing whatsoever.

Adventures Together

After several months of treating the M5 like a second home, Scott moved back to Bristol becoming a first-time homeowner, a milestone Charlotte wasted absolutely no time capitalising on. The years that followed were busy: surf trips, festivals, pub nights, and not one but two relationship endurance tests when Charlotte had knee surgery. Then came the sensible decision to buy a renovation project in Devon. After a long year of delays, a collapsed sale, and enough bureaucracy to test any relationship, they finally made it to Exeter. And because renovating a house apparently wasn't stressful enough, they got a puppy, and so Arlo arrived; golden, chaotic and absolutely convinced he is the solution to every problem. Somehow, between DIY weekends, puppy training, surf sessions, growing vegetables, and long evenings exploring Devon, they have packed a remarkable amount into five years, so far...

The Proposal

Five years after their first date in the Cotswolds, Scott suggested the perfect way to mark their anniversary would be to recreate it with overenthusiastic golden retriever in tow: romantic in theory, but the weather had other ideas. It was doing that uniquely British thing of being simultaneously freezing and raining sideways. Charlotte was approximately three minutes into the walk before settling firmly into loudly questioning why they were voluntarily doing this. Two hours and what felt like several hundred muddy hills later, Scott became increasingly fixated on finding the exact spot where they had stopped for lunch on that very first date. By this point Charlotte was thoroughly soaked, deeply suspicious, and quietly regretting both her attitude and the fact she had made absolutely zero effort with her hair or makeup. Then Arlo, with his unerring instinct for chaos, decided that the moment Scott finally found the spot was the perfect moment to make it all about him. Despite the soggy dog, the sideways rain, and Charlotte's increasingly dramatic running commentary, Scott got down on one knee. And just like that, the cold, the mud, the rain, and the questionable anniversary itinerary all fell away completely.
